Position purpose


The role of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is to develop state-of-the-art machine-learning algorithms
with applications to speech and audio processing. A specific goal is to account for human perception
in machine-learning algorithms for the processing and coding of speech and audio. An important
application area is augmented and virtual reality.


Position location


The role of the School of Engineering and Computer Science is to provide education in engineering
and computer science at all tertiary education levels and to perform research in engineering and
computer science and publish research outcomes.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow must work in the best interests of the University including its
community of students and staff.


The Postdoctoral Research Fellow must also assist the University to meet its mission, and strive to
behave in a manner that reinforces the University’s values.


Key responsibilities


 Machine-learning architectures and algorithms that naturally account for human perception in the
coding and enhancement of single-channel and multi-channel speech and audio signals.


 Demonstration systems implemented in Python or Matlab that illustrate the performance of the
new algorithms and its advantages over competing approaches.


For all staff:


 Each year complete the University’s e-learning module Health & Safety at Victoria, including
the assessment.


 Be able to demonstrate actions in an emergency situation that are specific to the workplace
and are designed to keep individuals safe.



Key relationships


The Postdoctoral Research Fellow reports to the Department Head of the School of Engineering and
Computer Science. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow has no staff with a reporting relationship.


The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will develop and maintain excellent relationships with:
Prof. Bastiaan Kleijn, VUW graduate students working in the same area, and with collaborators at
other research entities.

Selection criteria – essential


 Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science,
Mathematics, or related fields.

 The position requires extensive experience in signal processing and/or machine
learning. Prior knowledge of distributed processing will be helpful but is not required.
A good understanding of information theory will be helpful.


 A strong research track record, typically publications in top-level venues, is essential.
