The ECO2 Vehicle Design research center located at the Department of Vehicles and Aerospace within the School of Engineering, is a multidisciplinary research environment focused on enabling resource-efficient vehicle construction in the future. Our main research focus is on the vehicle as part of the transport system, where we take into account the requirements as a hearing aid from different system levels. The ECO2 Vehicle Design Center brings together a wide range of expertise in vehicle concepts, lightweight construction, noise and vibration, vehicle aerodynamics, rail technology and vehicle dynamics.

The ECO2 Vehicle Design Research Center is currently seeking a PhD student for a project focused on developing methods for designing and optimizing multifunctional structures for resource-efficient vehicle concepts.


One way to increase the durability of a vehicle is to integrate features into less complex design concepts that can utilize new types of lightweight materials. The purpose of this project is to develop a methodology that replaces the traditional paradigm, in which different functions are considered independent of and designed without taking into account each other until they are linked to meeting requirements for higher functional levels.


By studying the issues of integration and balancing of functions to be filled with demarcated areas and components of a vehicle, and in particular the clear dependencies identified, the research aims at developing solutions sharing the same physical space, with the lowest embedded energy, and who meet set goals. This is studied in the context of multifunctional design using topology, feature and dimension optimization for components (panels, substructures, ...) that will have acoustic, structural, thermal, fire, etc. properties while being resource-efficient.


These complex issues are studied in multidisciplinary, linked problems using appropriate numerical methods, for example. finite element methods.




For qualifications, a Master of Science degree in Technical Physics, Aerospace Engineering or other equivalent education relevant to the field is required, with a focus on acoustics, dynamics or technical mechanics along with numerical methods, and a pronounced interest in sustainability issues. In addition to traditional academic qualifications, one of the relevant qualification work, international experience and language skills is considered to be the merit.


The applicant should have a great interest in basic research and development. The service requires good ability to work independently and drive the project forward, to engage in new issues, to collaborate with other people in different groups.
